OUR STORY

Living History

The Otto family history is a rich tapestry woven with the threads of hard work, resilience, and entrepreneurial spirit. From Henry William Otto’s humble beginnings in Louisiana to the establishment of Otto & Company in Washington, each generation has contributed to the legacy of the family business.

William Henry Otto’s stewardship saw the business flourish, with George Henry Otto later expanding it to its final location at Elm and Second streets. The completion of the building, the largest in Washington at the time, stands as a testament to the Ottos’ determination and ingenuity, especially during challenging economic times.

The Otto family’s dedication to their craft extended beyond furniture-making, as evidenced by their foray into the funeral home business. This diversification underscored their adaptability and commitment to serving the community.

The family’s commitment to their business endured through wars and economic fluctuations, with each generation leaving its mark on Otto & Company. Walter’s joyful piano-playing on VE Day and Buck’s dedication to teaching radar to soldiers exemplify the Ottos’ unwavering spirit and sense of duty.

As Otto & Company closed its doors in 2006 after 145 years, the legacy of the Otto family lives on, not just in the buildings they constructed, but in the lives they touched and the stories they left behind.

New Ownership

Established in 2022, Otto Lofts manages the historic Otto & Co building, a landmark constructed in 1893 and owned by the Otto family for over a century. Our journey began with a passion for restoring historic properties, sparked by the purchase of our first commercial property. Instead of traditional condos, we chose to embrace the charm and character of a historical building, blending modern living with a rich past.

Our mission is to honor the Otto family’s legacy by meticulously restoring the building to its original splendor wherever possible. Otto Lofts offers leasing opportunities for retail, commercial, and residential spaces, inviting businesses and individuals to become part of this storied address.

Key features of Otto Lofts include spacious lofts, a rooftop deck with stunning river views, and proximity to a charming wedding church, making it a sought-after destination. Stay tuned for upcoming Airbnb spaces, offering a unique and historic stay experience.
